This operatic monodrama at Chicago's Harris Theater utilizes vocal performances, a string quartet and traditional Vietnamese instruments made from spent shell casings to commemorate and reexamine the tragic My Lai massacre from the Vietnam War. On March 16th, 1968, American soldiers entered the Vietnamese village of My Lai and began indiscriminately killing men, women and children while looking for Viet Cong fighters. Army helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson spotted the massacre from the air and acted decisively to stop the violence, landing his helicopter to shield fleeing villagers from their attackers, evacuating the wounded and later testifying against the murderers in Congressional hearings. This performance dramatizes Thompson's experiences during and after the war in a nonlinear narrative that examines the consequences of human action and inaction.
