Chicago's historic Navy Pier is located on Lake Michigan, east of downtown Chicago. Built in 1916 first for shipping and recreation, the Pier has also served as a military training facility, a venue for performances and exhibitions and even the temporary location of the Chicago campus of the University of Illinois.
