Have a thrilling wild animal encounter at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, one of the most popular Chicago tourist attractions in downtown Chicago. One of the oldest zoological gardens in the country, the zoo was established in 1868 when a pair of swans was donated to the Lincoln Park Commissioners. The zoo purchased its first animal, a bear cub, in 1874, and the collection has grown ever since to around 1,250 animals.
Combining its historic status with state-of-the-art exhibits, the Lincoln Park Zoo Chicago Illinois serves as an ambassador to encourage conservation of Earth’s wildlife and their precious habitats. Visitors can marvel at polar bears up-close in an underwater viewing area or check out the mischievous antics of the resident gorillas and chimpanzees in a modern enclosure designed to mimic their natural environment. Thrill to the sound of roaring lions and admire the statuesque beauty of an American bald eagle.
Children will delight in the SBC Endangered Species Carousel ride (for a nominal fee), adore the Pritzker Family Children’s Zoo and learn all about the workings of a farm at the Farm-in-the-Zoo exhibit. In addition, the park offers a variety of dining options, paddle boat and swan boat rides, a 4-D Virtual Safari Simulator and the LPZOO Express train ride for kids. The zoo is open 365 days a year and always offers free admission. There are small fees for specialty attractions.
