Part of the Master Plan of Chicago, created in 1889, by Daniel Burnham, Navy Pier has always been a recreational venue. It's also been a place for freight and docking of boat passengers. Known as Chicago's lakefront playground, Navy Pier opened for business in 1916, and was originally named Municipal Pier. The name was changed in 1927, to Navy Pier as homage to the U.S. Navy.
